Future of Learning Institute: Preparing Minds for the 21st Century

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, important changes in our societies are transforming the lives of young people around the world. Globalization, the digital revolution, and advancements in our understanding of human biology all present new opportunities and challenges to today's educators. Harvard Graduate School of Education's Future of Learning Institute, entitled "Preparing Minds for the 21st Century," is designed to help educators understand how changes in society are affecting learning today and in the future. It invites educators to examine what, where, and how children and adults should learn in order to thrive in the twenty-first century. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards improves teaching and student learning by offering National Board Certification. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review. National Endowment for the Arts Education Leaders Institute

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has partnered with the Illinois Arts Council to create the NEA Education Leaders Institute, a program to help increase the commitment of school leaders, state legislators, and policy makers to enhance the quality and quantity of arts education. National Gallery of Art Teacher Institute Summer 2010

"Crosscurrents of American Art: 18th and 19th Centuries" will explore American art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, emphasizing the country's rich and diverse visual heritage. Lectures, gallery talks, discussion groups, and hands-on activities will focus on American paintings and their ties to European traditions of fine art, as well as ceremonial and utilitarian art objects created by enslaved and free African-Americans. Native Americans stories will emphasize the importance of the oral tradition across tribal boundaries. The seminar highlights the social and cultural context of art and demonstrates interdisciplinary teaching strategies. Participants will explore connections to literature and music and visit other local cultural institutions. Two six-day sessions will be held—Session 1: July 12-17, 2010, and Session 2: July 26-July 31, 2010. For more information, visit www.nga.gov.

OMA Arts Integration Academy

The Arts Integration Academy is the cornerstone of the Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) Professional Development program. Held twice a year, this one-week, intensive, hands-on training in arts integration practice and strategies is for classroom teachers, arts teachers, teaching artists, arts integration specialists, and administrative staff.
